Sand Art Paintings by Campbell Auer

A rainbow of colorful sand is my pallet, and begins with fine demagnetized white silica to which I fuse pure pigment.

Functional Art: Composite Stone Wall Cabinet (48" x 48")

This cabinet is completely custom made and uses all wood drawer frames with heavy duty hardware. No pulls are used, only edge and top finger grooves. The artwork - made from a composite stone I call "Geomorphic Rock" - is applied over 3/4" MDF, has a textured feel and is very durable. The faces rest against a 1-1/2" black wood frame that is flush to the drywall giving the appearance of a framed fine art picture. (Most first time viewers are quite surprised when the cabinet is opened.) This custom piece is not available for sale, yet interested parties may contact me for pricing on other custom work that may include table and counter tops, kitchen makeovers, office accents and more. 1-800-436-7528.

Triptych 24" x 56" x 1.25"
$1600.00
This three piece sand painting is done on hardboard that was primed & painted gold. Working the three pieces as one provides continuity while creating interest through scale. The element of texture draws the viewer in, often encouraging touching, as the depth of color interacts with light. To buy this piece or inquire about custom work please e-mail me at geomanauer@gmail.com.

About My Art:

Campbell Auer
Rail Road Ranch Studio, Casa Grande, Arizona
A rainbow of colorful sand is my pallet, and begins with fine demagnetized white silica to which I fuse pure pigment. Each color is made from formulas that are mixed by hand, then raked continuously in the hot Arizona sun until cured. After testing and fining the sand is ready for use in the studio. I don't spray the sand...I throw it, whereby a percentage ends up on the studio floor and is later reunited with nature. I am always finding new tools to create images and patterns but one of my favorites is from a Tibetan monastery where it was used in making mandalas. As any child who has made a sand castle knows, playing with sand is as natural as it is fun. Societies both ancient and modern have used the properties of sand to impart meaning to healing and spiritual practices. My work with sand began in 1986 as experiments intending to create a light weight stone. I hoped to find a way of expressing the beauty of natures' most dynamic element in an art form. More than two decades and untold failed experiments later, I find that I am fortunate indeed to stand in the shadow of those who have pursued the creative force found in a single grain of sand.
